Baroque Fathers

The representation of the older, masculine presence in baroque opera and oratorio – or the father figure – often fell to the tenor much more so than in modern times where they are more likely to assume a younger, more romantic or heroic character. In this recital, Christopher Diffey, accompanied by Mark Austin, will sing a range of baroque arias expressing paternal feelings and emotions, be they in a caring fatherly way or an angry, vengeful one. Featuring music from three different composers, we will get a feeling for the ways that these baroque tenors differ from the more modern tenor. Programme Handel Comfort ye my people, Messiah Handel Deeper and deeper still, Waft her Angels, Jephtha Hasse Figli, di voi non meno, Se il mio paterno amore, Siroe Hasse Piu dubitar, Fra sdegno, Siroe Handel Il tuo sangue, Ariodante Rameau Lieux funestes, Dardanus Rameau Hatonous, Dardanus Handel Empio per farti Guerra, Tamerlano Handel Thou shalt break them, Messiah
