WHITE CITY - TAPESTRY IN THE BUILDING OF INSTITUT OF INFORMATION SCIENCE
The design for the White City tapestry in the premises of the Maribor Centre of Socio-Political Organizations was created by Marij Pregelj, one of the most important artists of Slovenian modernism, in 1964. This monumentally-dimensioned tapestry was made according to Pregelj’s design by the Atelje 61 tapestry art workshop in Novi Sad, Serbia, and hung in the entrance of the main hall in today’s IZUM. The tapestry is the artist’s reflection on Maribor as an industrial town. Against a blue and grey background, recognizable contours of the town are visible, with a group of figures in the foreground. The schematics and colours are characteristic of Marij Pregelj’s expressionistic interpretation. The tapestry is not in the best condition, due to decades of smoking and too much exposure to sunlight.
