C-type photograph on aluminium. An eerie yellow light artificially illuminates the night sky above an urban scene. Devoid of signs of life, the identity of the place is ambiguous. Glowing vibrantly with a flood of light, a spiral building surrounded by dazzling floodlights prevents a view of what is inside.
'Untitled (A Machine for Living In)' is from a series produced in 1999, and depicts the concrete landscape of the Bluewater shopping centre in Kent. Dan Holdsworth photographed mainly at night, using twenty- to thirty- second exposures. The process of time-lapse photography resulted in an enigmatic image that seems to pulsate with light.
