King James VI and I (1566-1625) reigned Scotland from 1567, England 1603-1625
Oil on panel. This is one of many examples of this type of James I portrait, originally painted by John de Critz in about 1605–06. De Critz painted additional versions himsel,f but large numbers of portraits inspired by his work were also produced by other artists, including this example.
James I disliked sitting for portraits, which goes some way to explaining why the same basic model for his depiction was repeated for so long.
