Description: Woollen sampler embroidered with black silk in cross-stitch. All the edges are hemmed, and on the left side there is a hemmed selvedge with double black lines. The border comprises a series of geometric and stylized half medallion motifs, which if worked with their mirror image would make a complete design. Within the border there are seven similar whole motifs and a floral spray. There are various inscribed initials and '1799' worked twice within five of these wreaths or lozenge motifs. In addition there is a detached inscription which reads 'M Quertier 1799'. Medallion samplers are associated with Quaker schooling.
