Large fan, having 14 curved, maroon-stained cane sticks, employed in pairs, and no guards. The two pairs of outer sticks are attached to the leaf to act as guards, kept in place with a lattice work of 3 strands of string, which knot at the upper edges and hang in tassels. The sticks are held by a metal rod, finished with two gold coloured, half-spherical beads. The leaf is of paper, double thickness, having been applied with wax for two motifs, both of flowers, and then worked with an antique gold effect. The wax is then removed, and the main side is painted with peonies and apple blossom, in blue, pink, greens and white, having a black stag beetle painted in at the centre. The reverse of the fan is also antique-gold coloured, the applied motifs showing through, and also having 5 small motifs dotted around the leaf, painted over in white paint. Possibly from Japan.
