Description: Wool, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, satin and stem stitch. There is a selvedge on both sides and the top and bottom are turned under and hem stitched. The upper part of the sampler is composed of horizontal bands of alphabets, numerals and repeat border patterns. The remainder includes a verse which reads 'Exonerate your Mind from Earthly Cares/ Spend each Lords day in Spiritual Affairs/ Such wretched Souls who Squander that away/ Repent it Sorely at their dying Day', symmetrically arranged detached motifs, a house, trees and flower pots and the inscription 'Sarah Stuart, her work, 1798'.
