Cleopatra, who has committed suicide, lies dead on a bed of gold. Iras, one of her women companions, is stretched out dying at her feet. Charmion, another of her women who is also slowly dying, is in the act of replacing the crown of her fallen mistress's head and looks up sharply as a group of soldiers rush in.
