Prison scene

Under a gloomy archway with daylight beyond, seven prisoners with hands and feet bound by heavy chains, one lying on the ground with his head towards the spectator, the others seated or leaning against the wall. The scene is dominated by a mood of utter despair. This prison scene belongs to a series of twelve ‘ caprichos’ that Francisco Goya painted on tinplate during his convalescence from a serious illness in about 1793. Size: 42.9 x 31.7 cm.
