St. Mark points to an open book which rests on the head of the winged lion that identifies him, and which became the symbol of Venice , the city of which he is patron saint . In real life he was a cousin of St. Barnabas and a friend of St. Paul . He travelled to Asia Minor ( Turkey ), Cyprus and Rome with these two men, on missionary work (Acts of the Apostles). His Gospel was probably written in Rome . What is reputed to be his body is buried in St. Mark's Cathedral, Venice . Size: 94.6 x 65.1 cm
