Although St. Eustochium lived between the fourth and the fifth centuries, in this painting she is represented as a seventeenth-century Spanish nun. She holds in her left hand a palm branch encircled by a crown; this signifies that she is a saint and a martyr. The background scene at the left, shows that she in kneeling before St. Jerome while her mother, St. Paula, bends over her. This picture was part of a series painting by Jan de Valdés Leal for the sacristy of the monastery of St. Jerónimo de Buenavista in Seville . Size: 206 x 122 cm.
